Volumes, lettered A-H and I-Z, contain alphabetical lists of the works in the Library arranged under author's names, with some entries also by titles or subjects of the vols.; the compilation of this catalog apparently progressed over a period of many years beginning with a list of all known volumes owned by the library in 1857. The compilation of such a catalog was authorized by the Board of Visitors 1857 June 27. The volumes are heavily annotated with explanatory notes and have additional pages tipped in. Marks made in colored pencils beside a number of its entries indicate vols. saved from the Rotunda fire of 1895 and vols. acquired after the fire. A label giving names of volume sizes is pasted in front of Vol. I.
